Inaugural Macquarie University Reconciliation Award

The College congratulated Dr Alasdair Murrie-West on being awarded the inaugural Macquarie University Reconciliation Award in 2017.

The award recognised the commitment of Dr Murrie-West and the College staff in developing a cohesive bicultural support programme for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students living at Dunmore Lang College while completing their studies at Macquarie University.

From modest beginnings, Dr Murrie-West and his team have worked closely with staff from Walanga Muru (Macquarie University’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student engagement and strategy office) especially Ms Emily Sutton and also Mr Brian Hurd (Macquarie University Scholarships Manager) to gradually build up an integrated set of resources and support structures. The focus of these initiatives has been to provide a culturally safe home away from home where students can not only complete their degrees but also gain leadership and cultural experience alongside their university studies. Beginning with five students when he first arrived at the College in 2013, this year the College welcomed forty-six students with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage from all over Australia.
