International Students

DLC Welcomes International Students!

Dunmore Lang College receives students from all over the world and prides itself on being multicultural.  About half of our residents come from outside Australia, giving excellent balance to the experience of life in an academic community.  Most of our students enjoy the diversity that Dunmore Lang brings and the experiences they receive here by living and learning about other countries and cultures.

When Semester Two started at Macquarie University at the end of July, the College had over 30 different countries represented by our students. Obviously moving to a new country - possibly away from home for the very first time - can be very exciting but also extremely stressful.  Not only are the students who come uncertain about what to expect, but parents also find this a very challenging experience.  Recently the media has been reporting that International students can feel isolated and lonely and there have been the more worrying stories around racial attacks.  In particular, we welcome Indian students, both undergrads and postgrads, who contribute richly to the College community.

At Dunmore Lang College we provide a supportive, family-like environment where everyone will feel welcome as soon as they step through the door. Starting with the application process, we now have an online chat facility where students and parents can talk directly to a member of staff.  Any urgent questions can then be quickly answered. When new students arrive they are welcomed at Reception and by their Resident Adviser. Resident Advisers are there for the students who live near them. They are senior students, many postgraduates, whom the College has hand picked to be the best at welcoming, supporting and managing the students who live on their floor. They arrange meetings and parties to make sure that everyone feels they are welcome. Resident Advisers are quick to detect if a student is homesick or just unwell, and alert the College staff if necessary.

We all need to feel safe, and that's what Dunmore Lang gives and more, whether you are moving here from within Sydney, elsewhere in Australia or overseas.
