"It meant a lot to be recognised for the little things I do around the college and to be thought of as a person with leadership potential. I am immensely grateful to John & Yvonne Almgren and to Dunmore Lang College for giving me the opportunity to meet them which was a fantastic experience." - Edward

Susan's Story

Susan Chan's home country is Malaysia.  She took the courageous step to come to Australia to further her education.

"I have always been passionate about helping people. After graduating from a Business degree, I was asked by my Dad to pursue a law degree in Australia. I knew it was a big challenge because being an International Student; I do not have the language advantage. Coming to Sydney was a huge step and although having to struggle through my course, I am proud to have completed a Bachelor of Arts last year, and currently in my 4th year of my Bachelor of Law degree at Macquarie University. I've come a long way to where I am right now and would aspire to be a legal aid lawyer one day as there is nothing more blissful than being able to help those in need.

Due to the different upbringing in my home country, Malaysia, I have always been a shy and reserved person. Throughout my 4 years living at college, I must admit that I have grown and learn not only to be independent, but also being confident as well as developing good leadership skills. I love to help and look after new international students as if they are my brothers and sisters. I assist them to adapt to the life in Australia and in college because I know what is like to be in a foreign country away from family (not to mention the culture shock!) and would like for them to fully embrace the wonderful experience college has to offer as soon as possible."

I am truly elated and honoured to be one of the recipients for the 2008 John and Yvonne Almgren Scholarship. It is indeed very touching being appreciated for my leadership qualities and also strong commitment towards the culture and social life within the college and towards community. It was an unforgettable experience being given the opportunity to meet up and have morning tea with Mr and Mrs John and Yvonne Almgren, where I was able to thank them personally for their kind contributions. Life would not be the same had I not chosen to live in Dunmore Lang College." - Susan
