Each year, Dunmore Lang College holds its annual musical fundraiser. This is a great college event on many levels.
It is a great way for students to be engaged in an event that they would not normally be involved in and it gives them a chance to develop new friendships with other members. The musical also is an excellent means of displaying college talent in visual arts. The event is held on “Parents Night” to give students’ parents the chance to see what happens during students’ time at college. As an added benefit it allows the College to donate to charity all the revenue generated on entry.
In 2015 we saw an energetic and enthusiastic round of musical auditions from the new students, which looked extremely positive for making 2015’s musical the greatest one Dunmore Lang had ever seen.
Over the next seven months the cast was set into full musical mode, as the script was written, re-drafted and finalised as the soon to be award-winning “10 Things I Hate About Goon”. Although the entire process of writing and rehearsing was incredibly stressful at times; a great and enthusiastic cast, incredible support and choreography of Katena Valastro, backstage managerial skills of Georgia Dodd and the amazing musical ability of Anthony King helped “10 Things I hate About Goon” to be a roaring success.
Performed over two nights, the first night was ‘Parents Night’ when parents and staff attended the performance. The performance went smoothly until one of the students decided to make popcorn on 3 East resulting in a visit from the fire brigade. In line with tradition ‘the show went on’ despite the bells and the Principal and Dean making a hasty departure. The following night was ‘Student Night’ and the cast followed custom and strayed liberally from the script and lyrics much to the amusement of the audience.
Both nights ended in well deserved applause from the audience with great reviews from both parents and fellow residents
The staff, students and their parents will in no doubt be all looking forward to next year’s musical if it is to be at the same level as this great event, this year.
